How much data might a film use?
Enter the duration and combined video/audio bitrate. The estimate assumes that bitrate stays constant for the full duration. It excludes container overhead, streaming overhead, advertisements and repeated downloads. Actual services can use variable bitrate.
The calculation
Decimal megabytes equal minutes × 60 × megabits per second ÷ 8. Divide by 1,000 for decimal gigabytes. A lower bitrate or shorter running time reduces the estimate. It does not establish a particular resolution or guarantee acceptable picture quality.
What about a 300MB movie?
Spread over 120 minutes, 300 decimal MB allows an average combined bitrate of about 0.333 Mbps before overhead. That illustrates a data budget, not an available movie file. Use a real app’s own download estimate when planning a specific offline edition.
